March Tours: Hot Graves // B A T I L L U S

The month of March in 2013 brings the mighty ringed planet Saturn out to dance in the sky above the waning gibbous moon. As Saturn peers over the earth from deep space, two bands of titanic proportions will make terrestrial landfall over the U.S., punishing its crust.

Hot Graves brings forth brooding evil d-beat with enough swag to make fashion punks shiver in their freshly-studded boots. Their latest EP, Fashion Victim unleashes four punked-out rippers expounding on their take of punk's upside down crossed, studded and back patched impact on high fashion. No one is safe from the wrath of the Graves, and when butt flaps make it to the runways and shops on Madison Avenue, be sure the knights in white phosphorus will be there to crush them.

While Hot Graves hastens the march to your shallow place of rest, Batillus composes deep industrialized doom for the requiem. Your decomposing body will have time to reflect on its past life as Concrete Sustain pulses slowly into a bleak realm of pain and urban decay. Batillus' guitars chug and sustain into glorious feedback while synthesizers loom overhead of pounding drum and bass.

Like Saturn watching closely overhead, you should keep watch of Hot Graves and Batillus as they hit the road this March. All tour dates are listed below.

People doing stuff: Metalcakes

Yes, our friends Stevie and Rob of Dark Castle are doing stuff, stuff around the world.. Playing beautifully heavy music. They are truly inspiring and have inspired a new Metalcake, the Awake in Sleep cupcake. These cakes are based off of the first track of Spirited Migration "Awake in Sleep" and even have some coffee in them! mmmmm. I love Metalcakes so creative and delicious, I first wrote about them here as they are a fond memory touring with Black Cobra.

BLACK FUCKING COBRA

Ok, so the only time I post anymore is when I start a tour. I'm sitting in the Atlanta airport waiting to fly to San Francisco to meet up with the Black Cobra dudes for another US//Canadian tour. This time we're teaming up with Gaza, Torche and the legendary Corrosion of Conformity! We actually just ended a two week European tour with COC and Zoroaster. All theses dudes are super tight! The shows were awesome! The highlight was probably Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Holland where BC headlined the Afterburner in front of a couple thousand stoners.

Night Fever/Estorbo/GP

Went to a show recently in Jacksonville. ESTORBO and GORILLA PUSSY from Miami were on tour. NIGHT FEVER from Denmark was added. They were doing an east coast tour with a dude from New Jersey. It was hot out so I brought some watermelon for the Danes thinking they didn't have watermelon in Denmark, but they said they did.. I wonder if they ate it or just thought I was crazy?

BLACK FLAG // SS CONSPIRACY?

BLACK FLAG!

Black Flag, the first hardcore band, tough as shit, DIY grandpas, classic, fuck yeah!
The "four bars" logo was created for the band in 1977 by Raymond Pettibon, Greg Ginn's brother, to represent a stylized waving black flag. It is undoubtedly one of the most easily recognizable band logos in music. It makes a great shirt and tattoo, but what message does it really spread? Is the iconic "four bars" logo a symbol of DIY ethos and hardcore music, a stylized symbol of anarchy or a skewed symbol of the Nazi SS?

To demonstrate the transformation, the four bars are simply reconfigured and skewed in three stages to make an SS symbol:

This video shows evidence of the SS symbol (on helmets and black flags) as originally used by nazi bastards. They bear a striking resemblance to stage two of our transformation.

1:27 shows a small symbol in a helmet.
3:01 is the best example. It shows a black flag with white bars as seen in the second stage.

Crow's Foot

I love crust, melodic hardcore and pretty much anything with a D-beat. That beat and rhythm absolutely drive you to be active and makes you want to do things faster. CROW'S FOOT blends those things and deep passion. They recently played in Jacksonville with TALK SICK EARTH and was just really dang good. This is my first interrogation of a band, here are the questions I asked them:

1. names and band roles?
Jaydee-vox, Ben M.-Drums, Max-guitar, Benzito-Bass

2. How did everyone meet up and start playing together?
In April 2008, Jaydee and I (Ben M.) saw Deserter play at the Tattoo House in Tampa. After
seeing how these kids were so passionate and angry, we knew that we had to start a band
together.

3. Where did the name Crow's Foot come from?
Ben’s brother, Robby, was the original guitarist. He got our band name from looking at a
peace sign and called it a crow’s foot.

4. Your on a 3 week tour right now, what has been a memorable date/place so far?
Is there a show your looking forward to?
Fort Myers was a memorable kick off show. We played at Cool Hand Luc’s with Tortured and
Tropiezo from Puerto Rico. We spent the earlier part of the day putting our records together
with our friends and eating vegan food. As Florida kids, we’re looking forward to playing
basement shows.

5. Where does the inspiration for your songs come from?
We’re inspired by each other, by our anger, and by the mindless destruction of the earth. We
are angry about the obscene treatment of non-human species.

6. Does living in Tampa or Florida have any certain affect on you individually or the band?
Yes.

7. Do you feel like Florida is a good place for music right now?
Yes

8. on the grid or off the grid?
Off

9. Outside of making music, distributing zines and traveling, how else do you spread your
beliefs?
As far as spreading our beliefs, I find it crucial to constantly engage in discussion with people
who are even remotely interested in what I have to say or even with people that disagree
with you. I constantly find myself talking to friends and strangers about topics such as animal
liberation, anarchy, and deep ecology. Through personal discussion I feel like I can reach
an individual in a more personal way, and vice versa, making the conversational topic a lot
more relatable. I always find it encouraging when I find out that one of my friends has decided
to go vegan after talking to me, it definitely brings to my attention the power of personal
discussions. - Benzito

10. What would you tell someone who wanted to reduce their consuming habits or why
someone should?
Our society trains us to be insatiable consumers and everything about that is wrong. I would
tell them to look at their possessions and their consuming habits and ask themselves to
perceive their belongings with a primeval mentality. What serves a profitable function to you?
Upcycle what you can use and give the rest of it away.

11. The Crow's Foot 10" vinyl record is really sweet. Can you talk about the songs, art and
packaging?
Jaydee did the art for the cover. Joe, Nevin, and Aysia from Ft. Myers helped us screen print
and sew the covers. Our songs cover subjects regarding earth and human liberation.

12. What other releases do you have?
Early demo, Crow’s Foot: Manifest CD, and a Split 7” with Deserter.

13. What is in the future for Crow's Foot?
We’re planning a south-eastern tour, for March 2012, with Kasatka from Belgium.

14. thanks for washing your dishes
Real punx wash dishes.

THE BODY//ASSEMBLY OF LIGHT//CIVILIZATION//HOT GRAVES

Pictures of the show from CLAY and JOSH

Video recorded by Josh's friend Mark via JOSH
The INFEST cover of "My World My Way" was probably the most fun song, we've only really played it once before, and did pretty well I think. We were definitely stoked on people singing along. One guy even had some of the lyrics tatooed on his arm. And I hope Joey's head was alright after some crucial headbanging into my headstock! eeek.

This is the only recording of the song Sum of Man, its the newer of our songs that we've just been playing live.

L O U D F A S T N O I S E

Sweeed

Seeing this recent Maximum RocknRoll Recording of The Week (6.15.11) about TERRIBLE FEELINGS (SE) has inspired me to write about them and some other great Swedish bands. I guess I was searching for information about MASSHYSTERI breaking up. The only media I could find was from either Swedish record labels or local Swedish blogsites, all in Swedish-English.

Among the postings was one about a new band that may perhaps fill up the void of Masshysteri. Maybe not necessarily the same style, but the same rock and roll punk attack. All Terrible Feelings had at the time was a Myspace with a few songs that you had to keep hitting play over and over to listen to them, remember that? I wonder how many plays I gave them? Those songs became their first demo which was down loadable at the end of 2010 off their Blog.

The demo was awesome, it has good natural sound, maybe home recording gear or tape? Songs are fast paced and twangy up tempo punk rock with 16th note drumming and equally fast guitar strumming. The vocals are naturally distorted sounding female shouts and harmonic talking with a melodic background vocals on some songs. The vocals also demand attention with emotional and passionate release. With a flip of the distortion pedal, the riffs range from twangy and surfy to distorted and raw with riff progressions that lead you through emotions and distress.

[I have to mention I feel Swedish punk is very special in that Swedish bands create very nice melodies, from punk, metal, electronic and pop (TO WHAT END?, WOLFBRIGADE, AT THE GATES, THE KNIFE and THE SOUNDS)

I just recently ordered a couple copies of their 7"s and a shirt, psyched on that. The band is on tour right now all over Europe and playing a lot. All of their material can be found on their Soundcloud page. This is good stuff!
